Google Think eCommerce conference, 28th April 2010

Yesterday I went to Google’s Think eCommerce event at London’s Royal Opera House. An array of speakers from brands such as Lastminute, Dell and John Lewis as well as Google’s own team of product managers spoke about trends and insights in the field of ecommerce, how best to take advantage of them and what current developments tell us about the future. Here are some of the items that were discussed:

5 Google Analytics Tips

1) You might be getting less visitors than you think. After 30 minutes, your visit counts as a new one. E.g. You browse on a site, walk away from the PC then come back two hours later.When you click on a new page or reload the current page, your visit counts as a new one.

2) You might be getting more visitors than you think. A proportion of visitors will block third party cookies (this is what GA uses to ‘tag’ you as a unique visitor) or disable Javascript to load on any site. These visitors will not be counted on GA.

4 Tips for Buying Old Domains for SEO

Recently, here at Blueclaw we have been discussing and researching the use of old domains and their effectiveness in SEO. Some great ranking successes we have had with clients were through refreshing content on aged domains. There are now lots of sites that “auction” old domain names or let you make a bid on soon-to-be-expired domain name.

If you are going to buy an old domain, here are four points to consider:

  • Domain Age. Generally the older the domain, the most “trusted” it is by Google
  • Page Rank. It is possible to “inherit” Page Rank from a website, but first do a complete check on its history, using the points below.

How To Improve CTR and Quality Score - Optimisation Tips

Click through rate and quality score improvement is really all about optimising your ad copies and making them more relevant to potential buyers. Editorial optimisation should mainly focus on designing highly relevant and targeted advertising to help drive qualified traffic to your site.

1. Keyword Insertion {KeyWord:………….}
Once you have created tightly themed ad groups, use the keyword insertion tool in your ad copies to make your message more relevant. When a user sees an ad with the same term they searched for, they’ll be more likely to click the ad.

2. Inter-capitalize your ad texts
A lot of advertisers neglect this aspect in they campaigns but appropriate capitalization in an ad always improves its appearance, makes it look more professional and most importantly it attracts more hits.
