A few days ago I read that the Google Comments feature is no more. No I had no idea that there even was one either.
Having joined the SEO world, I have realised that is exactly what it is sometimes – its own little world. Some ideas break out of that world and gain public notoriety. Some don’t, but the SEO world doesn’t seem to notice. The Google Comments feature is one of the latter.
It was the idea that users could comment on search results and say whatever they like, good or bad. This would then be made public and other users could read these reviews. It was Google’s first attempt at integrating the ‘social’ craze into its core service. No one seemed to bother with it – but why?
I think it’s because of the faceless nature of Google in its present incarnation. At present search engines are only at the beginning of the road to becoming more than a simple gateway to other pages. This should and probably will change drastically in the future with the launch of Google Squared, which will see pictures, videos and text results will all share the same page space.
For a start, this integration will let Google ditch the faceless feel (which it so desperately tries to do through its ever-changing logo) giving it more social network appeal. This could then lead onto the successful integration of social features, possibly through the use of Youtube. RIP Google Comments? Perhaps it’s just on ice.
