Link Pages: Keep Them Sweet

If you are experienced in SEO then this may seem obvious. Even if you are not experienced in SEO then this still may seem obvious. However it seems like a good point to reiterate and this is keeping links pages to a minimum simple and to a minimum of 100 links. I am echoing the sentiments from Matt Cuts in regards to thins and really do feel that this is important when linking both through reciprocal and directory submissions.

As SEOs we see link pages all the time and can’t begin to count how many of these time have we been turned off by link pages that you have to scroll for almost a lifetime to get to the bottom of. They do not look pretty and it looks very spammy. We have all been there when you come across a gem of a page and it’s on a relevant site to the site you are optimising for, you then glance up and see that it has a high page rank (5+), your heart begins to beat a little faster, you are just about to get the details together to get a cheeky reciprocal link when all of a sudden you are brought back down to earth as you realise that there are way too many links on the page and so the possibility of any link juice being passed your way is highly unlikely.

It is recommended therefore to keep links pages down to a hundred on each page minimum and this is Google’s recommendation. The reason for Google’s recommendation on keeping links to a minimum of 100 links to a page as Matt Cutts states is due to the fact that Google only used to index roughly 100K/b of a page and so 100 links was recommended. Although, as he does points out, Google in this present time will index pages over this it is still recommended to follow this guideline.

So keep your link pages short and sweet. Pay attention to presentation and don’t give off an ‘I don’t really care about these pages as they really have nothing to do with my actual site’ attitude. If your links pages are running over the 100 mark or the page is taking a century to scroll down then create another page or create category pages. You may after all increase the chances of getting some sites wanting to exchange links with you.
