SEO penalties for Duplicate Content

Recently one of our clients came to us for advice on duplicate content. Running a travel company, they wanted to create a separate site for information specifically on one area of travel. This site will contain duplicate content in terms of having the same travel schedules.

This led us to think about the issue of Duplicate Content and whether or not this will affect SEO. The official advice from Google seems quite straightforward - don’t try to deceive search engines.

In terms of copying some of the same content into two different domains, we advised the client to keep each site unique and relevant. Spending that extra bit of time making sure that your site has the best content for their target audience will mean that you won’t even need to worry about penalties for duplicate content.

Bing and Yahoo to merge

Bing and Yahoo are to announce a merger deal today, which will see Bing used to power Yahoo searches in the future. The deal has been discussed for some time as a new strategy to overtake Google, which presently holds a 63% share of worldwide searches.

The deal should see Yahoo as a new platform to deliver on Microsoft’s new search technology, such as delivering highly-targeted ads, following its currently unsuccessful launch of the Bing brand.

The Future of Search?

The dominating search engines of the present, with Google leading the charge, all base their rankings on keywords. In order to rise in the rankings of the top search engines businesses currently need to target and promote specific keywords. When a business’ niche is such that different keywords are relevant to the site the current keyword based search engines can force businesses and SEOs to make a decision at the start of an SEO campaign to target one keyword more aggressively than another other. There are only so many keywords that a home page can be optimised for before diluting the effect specific keywords are having. However, there may be a solution to this problem in the way search engines may look to develop in the future.
