This time round, I’m touching on the brief history of social bookmarking and the advent of the image bookmarking phenomenon, PLUS a list of 10 image bookmarking sites (and 2 more!) and the seo benefits of image bookmarking. Bargain! UPDATE 17th May: Rand fishkin at SMX London has just confirmed that image ALT tags weigh more than H1 tags. As SEOs we are very much aware of the benefits of using social bookmarking as part of linkbuilding. Sites like Digg, Reddit and Stumbleupon are considered mandatory: bookmarking your blog posts and websites not only helps increases traffic to your webpage, it helps create a good mix of backlinks in your collection. From Social To Viral (The term viral here does not exclusively refer to videos that has generated a considerable number of hits in a short period of time, rather, an umbrella marketing term that refers to the use of existing social networks to produce an increase number of mentions / awareness on a particular topic, brand or trend) Sites like Digg, especially, has the potential of making your bookmarked link go viral. Essentially, you’re not just bookmarking a link, you are creating conversations around the topic in the link: Digg allows its users to comment on the link and share it with friends on twitter and facebook. Its no surprise that its popularity has spawned a great many number of digg-clone sites, most of them perusing the pligg tool to create their own social bookmarking sites. Not all of them are great but some of them are getting there: you can check out this massive list of digg-clone social bookmarking sites sorted according to page rank, alexa rank, dofollow and popularity: Social Bookmarking Sites Listed in Order of Pagerank, Alexa Rank, Popularity and DoFollow . Now here’s the thing: like directories, social bookmarking can be useful but also tedious and boring. Going through that list of social bookmarking sites you realize that not all of them have that sense of community, they try hard to emulate Digg and may succeed at its basic function, but the end result is just a mind-numbing collection of spammy looking links. The other problem is that: how many real humans go through these sites to search for information and inspiration? The Start of Image Bookmarking Enter image bookmarking. I love image bookmarking. Everybody loves looking at images. They are colorful, beautiful and they speak louder than a 500-word keyword rich article in an article website nobody reads. Image bookmarking came about after the popularity of design blogs: people don’t just want to rely on the sometimes infrequent updates of design blogs to get their daily dose of inspiration, they want to submit and share their own finds too. A List of 10 Image Bookmarking Sites + 2 more At the moment, I can only find 10 image bookmarking sites on the net. I am quite surprised this technique hasn’t caught on yet. WeHeartIt A simple image bookmarking site, open to everyone. Simply create an account and start submitting. They have a special bookmarklet which you can drag and drop into your browser so the next time you trawl the web and spot an amazing image, just click on it to submit to the site. Allows its members to heart their favorite image from the pool. The more hearts an image gets, the more popular it is. mages in here fall mostly into the photography catergory, the kind that is heavily filtered, warm-lensed and vintage looking. Vi.sualize.us Supposedly the first ever image bookmarking website. The owner wanted to create a bookmarking site that is not elitist and is open to all as well as mantaining its credibility as a truly inspirational visual website. Simply create an account and start posting. You can also download a plugin for your browser. Members can like an image and even post comments about it. Typeish A closed bookmarking community - and for a good reason! This is an image bookmarking community that carefully selects the images it displays on the site. And you can tell: the images all fall into a sort of artistic / design theme. To join, you need to email them and ask / beg for an invite. FFFFound FFFFound! Probably the premier image bookmarking site on the internet right now. It emerged after Vi.sualize.us and started off as a pretty simple and straight to the point image bookmarking site that allows you to register an account and post images. Its popularity forced it to close registrations and now you can only join FFFFound if you have an invite. Images in here fall strictly into the design, artistic and inspiration theme. IMGFave A simple, WeHeartIt clone made on Tumblr. Condense A french image bookmarking site. Currently a closed community but it intends on opening registrations soon. Images strictly into the graphic design spectrum: typography, architecture, packaging and ads. Picocool Another closed community image bookmarking site, but I wouldn’t call it inspiring really. The website looks bland in comparison to the rest I have mentioned here. You need an invite before you can even register, which is a downer. Yayeveryday One of THE BEST image bookmarking sites out there, except that the emphasis is on the artists themselves: original works / images made and submitted by the users.  It is a community of artists, designers, photographers and the people who appreciate them. Users get dedicated profile pages that credits their work, websites, fans, etc. Members can comment on each other’s submissions. Enjoysthin.gs Simply, a place to share and save things you enjoy. People submit their favorite image, and users can rate the image by enjoying it. The more enjoys an image gets, the more popular it is. And a few more similar ones: Lookbook.nu A fashion community site that allows users to submit images of themselves wearing fashionable or stylish items of clothing. Members can hype a particular image and share the image on twitter and facebook. This is a large growing community already with a japanese version. The site cross promotes each and every submission in its own various microsites and social profiles on tumblr, facebook, twitter etc. Polyvore Similar to Lookbook, except that you can also buy the looks. Users can create looks from available items for sale on the site and images of their own and create style inspiration called sets. deviantART A community site that emerged during the livejournal craze. Oh man, I still remember when livejournal was awesome. Nostalgia. Anyway, deviantART is where users can create profile pages, post, discuss share and rate each other’s submissions. It is one of the largest social networking sites for emerging, amatuer and established artists and art enthusiasts with more than 13 million registered users. The SEO Benefits of Image Bookmarking Image bookmarking has the added benefit of going viral quicker than a simple text link. This is because sites like those mentioned above don’t just display your images, it also saves the link in it as well. We Heart It does not use the nofollow attribute on its links. So does Typeish and Enjoythi.gs. All these sites are a minimum of PR 5, and FFFFound doesn’t just keep your link, its saves the alt tags and title of the post it was submitted from as well. The plus side is that you don’t need to be an artist, designer or photographer to participate. As long as the image / content is interesting enough, you’ll make the cut. This also inspires and motivates you to create interesting and unique ideas and ways to market your site / brand. Also, if you are clever enough to replicate these websites, you will see how easy it is to get free content easily, sub-automatic community-driven and daily at that. A great, simple and legit link-baiting technique! Example of Image that has received many Hypes When a member submits an image that has received many hypes, likes or enjoys, they are sure to link back to the post from their own blog to show this off. People like to be popular and people love it when they get good ratings. The backlinks for you will just keep pouring in. If you add a link (like your client’s) with the image and if it gets reblogged and goes viral, all you gotta do is just harvest the links that gets generated. There is also the added bonus that these backlinks are all dofollows. I have also noticed that sites like these get a high Pagerank quicker than normal blogs. (Some of those sites mentioned above, according to their whois records were only created recently, between late 2007-2008.) Of course, the age old argument that an image’s alt tag does not weigh as much as anchor text on a text link will surface, but at the end of the day, a link is still a link and spiders can only read images as text if you leave the alt tags in. How to streamline your campaign ideation process in 4 simple steps.

One of the key components to a successful content marketing campaign is conceptualizing ideas that are newsworthy, relevant and impactful – and ideas that require as little groundwork as possible before being pitched to a client. This is especially important in the current climate, where an ever-changing news scene requires research teams to be reactive and be able to pivot or rework an idea with minimal resource loss. And although you may feel as though your ideation sessions yield positive results, there’s always an opportunity to tighten up the process and make your life easier later down the road.

At Blueclaw, our ideation process has gone through numerous iterations to suit the way we work, our team strengths and our clients – and now, having navigated almost seven months of remote working alongside an influx of new campaign concepts, the process is the most streamlined it’s ever been.

For us, conceptualising a new campaign is now much more than regurgitating tried-and-tested methodologies that hundreds of other agencies have already used, or reshaping previously-pitched ideas to fit new briefs. It’s something that our team gets genuinely hyped for, meaning our sessions now generate campaign ideas that we’re enthusiastic about, confident in, and proud to pitch.

But it’s important to strike the right balance between thinking of campaign ideas that get the team excited and those that fit the brief, in that they’re relevant to the client, easily doable within budget constraints, and that they’re likely to get picked up by journalists. Although this often seems like an impossible task, it’ll become second nature once you have a solid process in place. Below are some of the ways we recommend streamlining your ideation sessions to help you make the most of your campaign conception, refinement and execution.

Produce a comprehensive brief ahead of time

Preparation is key to any successful brainstorming session, so you need to make sure you provide every member of the team with a detailed brief well in advance. It’s not really enough to shoot your core ideation team a quick email the morning of where you confirm the budget and target site – ideally, you need to send over a comprehensive document that includes the following a few days before the session:

  • Client domain, target URL and anchor text to clarify the SEO focus
  • Budget, including whether there are any external expenses to be accounted for (such as surveys, materials or translations)
  • Target demographics, such as intended gender and locations
  • KPI, so you know whether you’re aiming to build links or boost brand awareness
  • Existing backlink profile, to gauge the client’s previous areas of success
  • Competitor analysis, to see what other content rivals are producing
  • Any additional notes, such as: restrictions on subject area, any areas the client is particularly interested in, targeted sectors or hosting restrictions

It’s fine if you don’t have every single detail you need before the ideation session, but the more information you can pass over right at the start of the process, the more back-and-forth you’ll save when it comes to pitching. Regardless of the details you have, make sure that you set a dedicated hour or two aside before your meeting to come up with ideas – better still, try to do this at least a day in advance in case inspiration strikes in the interim. And don’t feel like you can’t pursue a concept just because it’s occurred to you outside of working hours – you can always make a note of it and refine it further once you’re next in the office.

Quantify your campaign concepts before the session

Gone are the days where team members bring half-baked ideas to an ideation to feel like they’ve contributed while knowing full well that their concept will fall through when it comes to the refinement stage. You can reduce the risk of this by establishing a core ideation team based on who’ll be working on the campaign; this should generally consist of the researchers, the outreach team and the design team, and occasionally the SEO account lead if you feel they’re required. Then, the onus is on every member to bring something valid to the table that they’ve vetted for validity, newsworthiness and feasibility.

Once you have a campaign concept, you should search for potential data sources – never the other way around unless it’s an exceptional circumstance. Newsworthiness should dictate everything you do if your aim is to build links, or else you’re essentially rehashing existing data without a clear understanding as to why. It always helped me to think of it like writing an essay or conducting an experiment – you need your thesis first, so you know what you’re trying to prove or disprove when carrying out the research.

Some tools that are great for narrowing in on a campaign concept include AnswerThePublic, which allows you to see what consumers are searching for within a topic field, Google Trends, which shows the relative popularity of related search terms and indicates when they peak over a set period of time, and Statista for access to numerous datasets and reports.

A campaign concept is worth bringing to a session if it has a clear thesis or hook (for example, you want to see which country cheats the most while playing video games), a clear dataset or methodology (such as a survey), clear outreach targets (gaming, nationals and men’s interest) and you’re confident it’s doable within the budget. Investigate the extent to which it’s been covered before, by who and how recently, and decide whether your idea fills a gap in the market or still holds relevance either way. You should also try to clarify what form it could take – such as an infographic or megapage – but it’s fine if you don’t have that solidified as the design and development team will advise on that in the session.

That being said, don’t feel like you can’t also bring less developed or top-level ideas to an ideation. Some of the strongest campaigns I’ve worked on have resulted from collaborative brainstorms where we’ve taken a seed of an idea from one person and worked together to reach a solid concept. It’s always worth including a more informal discussion at some point in the session just in case there are any hidden gems that need to be fleshed out.

Conduct a collaborative and structured session

A personal favourite lockdown discovery has been ideation tool Ideaflip, as it allows collaborators to stick their ideas on aesthetic virtual sticky notes on a shared interface and include internal links, images and handy buttons to indicate their reception. Best of all, the ideas stay in their dedicated boards indefinitely, so you don’t have to worry about someone coming into the meeting room after you and wiping clean the whiteboard or deleting an important document.

Make sure that everyone has time to run through their ideas and is able to explain their reasoning in a session before opening up the floor to questions or feedback, as this can make a massive difference on how people present ideas moving forwards. Ideations should be spaces where people can express their concepts and work as a team to strengthen them, rather than tearing them apart or speaking over one another. Once you’ve all run through ideas, it’s important to allow every member to place their votes on which idea they feel the most confident about and which they feel need more work, to ensure that you’re not pitching anything that the team isn’t invested in.

Refine concepts and sign them off before pitching

The final step to any watertight ideation process is to further refine concepts and ensure everyone on the team is happy with the end result before putting them in front of the client. This is essential even if you feel like an idea is good to go once the session is over, as you never know if the researcher has missed a similar campaign or updated report that could derail your idea. If it wasn’t done beforehand, now is the time to double check how recently your idea has been covered – if at all – and what data sources you can use.

When you’re adding them into a pitch deck, it’s also a good opportunity to test the ‘elevator pitch’ concept, whereby you’ll have to summarise your campaign concepts in a few sentences while ensuring that the client understands your intention. Within the slide you should touch on the campaign focus and goals, the methodology you’ll use, what form it will take (whether it’ll be static, interactive or a series of press releases), what sectors you’ll target and what potential headlines you envision resulting from the research. If you can’t put together those for your campaign idea, you may need to revisit it or refine it further.

You should share the finished deck back around the ideation team to get their final approval before discussing it with the client. Not only does this allow you to iron out any kinks or miscommunications before you commit to doing something, but it ensures that everyone knows which ideas are under consideration with which client. Everyone must be happy – at least for the most part – with the campaign ideas before they progress, even if it means going back to the drawing board for one or two more concepts after the deck is done.

Finally, we also recommend building a resource or vault with all previous campaign concepts detailed in – preferably sorted by client, sector or budget – so you can pull a solid idea together in a pinch. Although it seems extensive, putting in this work early on allows you to produce campaign concepts that you’re genuinely excited to work on, and makes for a more enjoyable outreach experience on the whole!
