Finding the most popular mobile phones

In yesterday’s blog, we analysed the search market around broadband deals. Today we’re continuing with our ‘home technology’ topic, as we use keyword data to find what the most popular mobile phones are from a search perspective.

In order to do this, firstly we need to pull the keyword data around different phones from SEMrush. This is fairly easy to do, just log in, enter a search term, and export the phrases!

Having got the data, we then produce this into a chart.

Evidently, there’s an overwhelming winner here with average searches for the iPhone 6 pushing 1,500,000 per month. The number of searches in the UK alone seem to reaffirm its title of 2015’s bestselling phone. Unfortunately, we were unable to find any data around the Samsung Galaxy S6, and so we have used the S5. It performs well, ‘outsearching’ the iPhone 5c, but still it does not come close to the iPhone 6. Searches for ‘Moto G’ which has had several regenerations since its initial release comes last in our list.

Now we turn our attentions to across the pond, and it’s clear the iPhone 6 once again runs away with it, and by an even bigger margin. As a result, it’s difficult to really analyse how close the others are to each other, and so we’ve removed the iPhone 6 from the chart.

Now we can see how close it is between the chasing pack, where the S5 once again comes home in second place, followed by the iPhone 5C. At the bottom of the pile the Moto G has swapped places with ‘Sony Xperia’ compared with the UK results.

Overall, it’s clear that the iPhone 6 is the winner from the phones which we chose to do the analysis on. It seems that the latest incarnation of Apple’s iPhone will nearly always top the rankings, and with the iPhone 7 rumoured to be on the way in the Autumn, it would be surprising if it didn’t outperform the iPhone 6 in terms of search volume and sales.
